My work is concerned with Beginnings, Endings
and what happens in between. Black, white and all the tones
that separate them. Shadows that exist but don't exist. It explores
layers of experience, memories of apparently random repetition
- things that re-occur spontaneously over time and which eventually
accumulate into some sort of significance. The journey that
takes us from one point to another both physically and spiritually.
Heads or,to be more accurate 'Hoods'
are a repeated motif. They can be skins, masks, boundaries,
electric security fences that allow us to protect and defend
ourselves in order that we live longer. Not only a survival
mechanism but also something that allows us to be ourselves,
or as in a mask,a passage through to another world or sensibility.
I use a variety of materials, building up
both 2D and 3D images that mirror the process of adding layers
and marks that will ultimately both reveal and obscure allowing
things in and out as I, or the material used, chooses.
I often work
in sequences, producing separate parts of a journey which then
have to be brought together as a whole. Although each disparate
piece can survive on its own it is a vital and integral part
of the whole.
